Imatib is used for the treatment of various cancers including stomach cancers (gastrointestinal stromal tumors) and chronic myelogenous leukemia. This medication interferes with the growth of the cancer cells and controls their spreading throughout the body. In case of leukemia the medication interferes with the uncontrolled growth of the white blood cells that are the primary cause of this type of cancer.
Imatinib 400mg tablets are to be taken orally. If not otherwise not prescribed by the doctor the medicine should be taken once or twice a day with a glass of water and a meal. The doctor may increase or decrease the dosage and may also change the pattern in which you are taking the medication. Therefore, it is necessary for you to follow a prescription label carefully.

Some common side effects like teary eyes, night sweats, constipation, gas, muscle cramps, depression, indigestion, loss of appetite, joint pain, vomiting, nausea, depression and anxiety can occur which are not serious as they may fade away after sometime. However, some serious side effects like weight gain, breathlessness, swelling in hands, lower legs, feet and ankles, fainting, coughing pink mucus, increase in urination, fever, chest pain, blood in stool, chills and sore throat should not be ignored. Contact your physician if the effects worsen.
Keep the drug in the air tight container it came in and in a cool place where it is out of children’s reach.
